Nurses

Canada

  • Although the Brain Development & Learning conference will be awarding general certificates noting hours of educational instruction, currently, none of the regulatory bodies in Canada have specific continuing education requirements for practicing registered nurses. The regulatory bodies do not assess continuing education programs to assign C.E.U.s (continuing education units). Nurses in Canada do keep records of participation in continuing education for purposes of maintaining specialty certification and in British Columbia and Ontario for continuing competence programs. In most provinces and territories, nurses who have not practiced for a specified number of hours within a specified time limit must take a refresher course before being given permission to return to work in nursing.

Canadian nurses are accountable for providing competent nursing care to their clients. The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) believes that to provide competent nursing care, a registered nurse must maintain and continuously enhance the knowledge, skills, attitude and judgment required to meet client needs in an evolving health care system.

* BC Law Society

The Law Society’s minimum expectation for continuing professional education is 12 hours in the annual reporting period or roughly two full-day continuing education courses. Although there is no rule that members engage in continuing professional development, the Law Society views professional development as a responsibility of all members. By requiring members to report continuing professional education and self-study activity, the Law Society is encouraging a commitment to career-long learning. You may provide any comments about the number of hours you have spent during the reporting period.

Typical continuing professional education activities include the following:

  • Live programs, workshops, and conferences, such as those offered by the CLE Society of BC, Trial Lawyers Association, CBA (including section meetings), Federation of Law Societies and other continuing education providers
  • In-house legal education programs offered to employees by law firms and in-house legal departments
  • Interactive on-line programs, such as CLE Society of BC programs
Video and DVD replay programs in an organized group setting
  • Organized education discussion groups, such as CBA subsection meetings
  • Participating in post-LLB degree programs
  • Teaching in PLTC, continuing professional education programs, and law school programs
  • Preparation time for teaching (estimated total hours).

Ongoing learning and enhancement of competence related to professional ethics are of considerable importance. Please estimate your total annual hours of practice ethics education, if any.

Ongoing learning and enhancement of competence related to practice management are of considerable importance. Please estimate your total annual hours of practice management education, if any.

The Law Society’s minimum expectation for self-study activity is 50 hours in the annual reporting period. This equates to approximately one hour per week. The self-study report should not include time spent on file-specific reading, study or research. Examples of self-study activity that would be accounted for include the following:

  • Reading and writing printed material (including electronic printed material), such as publications of continuing professional education providers, legal texts, case law, and articles in the Advocate, Law Society publications, Canadian Bar Review, Bar Talk and other legal journals
  • Internet refers to information obtained on-line, such as through on-line learning, listservs and chat rooms. If, however, you participated in an on-line program, other than in a chat room, at the same time as other members of the on-line program audience, please record that time as continuing professional education, not self-study.
  • CD-ROM
  • Videotape / DVD (other than in an organized group setting
  • Audiotape

If these education tools, such as CD-ROM, videotape and DVD are used in a structured group setting or course, please record your time as continuing professional education, not as self-study.
